Jacques Hnizdovsky Selections from the Permanent Collection
UIMA is proud to present an extensive selection of works by Jacques Hnizdovsky (1915–1985), one of the most celebrated Ukrainian-American artists of the twentieth century, drawn from the Institute's Permanent Collection. Renowned for his masterful woodblock prints depicting cats, sheep, trees, and the natural world, Hnizdovsky's work is held in major institutions including the National Museum of American Art and Yale University. This exhibition brings together an impressive array of his prints alongside several rare paintings, marking the first time many of these pieces, including recent donations made over the past several years, have been on public view.
This exhibition is presented as part of UIMA's 55th anniversary celebration. It honors both a beloved artist and the Institute's long-standing commitment to preserving and promoting Ukrainian art and culture.

Ukraine Voices from the Gray Zone
Compiled over nine extensive humanitarian aid trips to Ukraine between 2022 and 2026, Voices from the Gray Zone documents daily life under russian aggression in some of the regions most affected by occupation and war. Presented as a timeline of photographs and video, the exhibition traces the struggles, resilience, and increasingly dangerous conditions faced by Ukrainian civilians and communities on the ground.
Bladholm's work bears witness to the people of Ukraine, giving voice to those russia has sought to silence through violence and oppression. The exhibition offers Chicago audiences a rare, firsthand visual record from an artist who has repeatedly traveled into the country during wartime, building direct relationships with the communities he photographs.

The 2025–2026 Wynn Kramarsky Freedom of Artistic Expression Grant, awarded by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, greatly supplements our operating budget while providing essential funding for curatorial programming, public programs, publications, and exhibition support, including honoraria, preparatory work, shipping, and travel stipends.
This award recognizes organizations with a deep commitment to preserving and defending the First Amendment rights of artists, and curatorial efforts on behalf of those whose rights to free expression have been challenged.

Ukrainian and American modern art, collected since 1971 Sculpture, painting, and print, held in trust for the community
The collection includes major works by Alexander Archipenko, Alexis Gritchenko, and Mychajlo Andreenko, alongside Soviet-era Ukrainian Non-Conformist artists and Chicago artists including Richard Hunt, Thomas Kapsalis, and Michiko Itani.
